TLC For Your Car Stickers

Karen Griffin - Monday, November 25, 2013

Getting noticed for all the wrong reasons is far too easy.  A damaged rear car sticker might reflect badly on your business, so it is well worth investing in a little TLC to keep it working hard for your business.

  1. Try to keep the car clean - it is now not just your car, but a mobile advertisement!
  2. NEVER use an ice scraper on the rear window.  You will chip the lettering.  Indeed, better than any forecaster, we can tell where the first frosts are around the country as we get requests for replacement letters.  And we can tell whether the owner is left or right handed . . .
  3. Heated rear window elements, car washes, rear windscreen wipers and de-icer spray are all go, go, go
Follow these three easy steps and the decal will serve you well, and it won't fade either.  It will just keep doing its job and getting you noticed.

At last - The Convertible Solution?

Karen Griffin - Monday, November 11, 2013

In the changeable British weather, we had genuinely not realised that so many business owners would be driving convertibles - but a small number have been working with us to find an acceptable solution.

One is to use a thinner, flexible vinyl material that can cope with the flex in the screen as it is stowed away.  Time will tell whether this is a lasting solution (we expect our car decals to last as long as the car with the correct care), but I suspect it will crack after 2 years dependent on how many times the roof goes up and down.  . . and not even the weather forecasters can accurately predict that!

rear window decal on a convertible carThese car stickers don't cause any damage to paintwork and this could be a solution for those with small rear windows.  It has certainly got Sue noticed!

Next week - how to care for your car sticker.

Convertibles are Challenging

Karen Griffin - Monday, November 04, 2013

Last week we highlighted the value of rear car decals as part of a marketing strategy.

Quite rightly, we had a few enquiries from those whose rear windows are not suitable for decals.  Take convertibles . . .

But 4x4's obscured by tyres are easy - just use a tyre cover.

rear tyre coverSemi rigid tyre cover, available to fit most tyre sizes these are £85 each (exc delivery). Like all our products, it comes with free design service and the details can be changed over time if need be.

Still working on a solution for convertibles . . . .

And the Car In Front is BORING

Karen Griffin - Friday, October 25, 2013

We have all been there - stuck in traffic, nose to tail.  Nothing to do except hum along to a banal radio tune or fix the make-up (though what the guys do, I cannot say!).

If your business mostly operates in your local area - the places you drive to most days - then your rear is definitely going to be your most cost effective form of advertising without exception.  It may be Friday afternoon, but we are definitely talking the rear of your vehicle.

Leaflets, adverts on radio or paper - all have a shelf life.  But the life of your vehicle will be longer than either of those.  Dependent on the design, rear car decals (an Americanism for you) raise your profile in the area, remind people you are there, direct traffic of the internet kind and, most importantly - Get You Noticed.

So for just £35 for a single colour, or £40 for two colours, rear car decals should definitely be on your marketing hit list.

Stand Out From The Crowd

Karen Griffin - Saturday, October 19, 2013

Vinyl Advertising banners - fantastic product to get you noticed.  Cheap, versatile, and usually free from planning permission for 30 days of display (with the landowner's permission - do check also your local Council regulations on temporary signage)

Whether it is an event you need to promote, or you want to attract visitors to a shop or showroom, it is vital to plan where you are going to put your vinyl advertising banner.  Design is everything!

Vinyl Advertising banner Drive along the A12 regularly and you may see this banner (pictured left).  But could you read it?  Or was this a complete and utter waste of money?  Also, it is a printed banner and therefore cannot be re-used.  More on this in a future newsletter.

Re-Usable Vinyl Advertising bannerThe banner to the right is made slightly differently and is totally re-usable.  It can be updated to reflect different events or stages in your business offers.  It is also pictured from a busy dual carriageway - this time the A27. Which is easier to read as you whizz past at 70 odd miles per hour?

Griffin Designs offers a free design service for each banner sold, making sure you get noticed!

How Can You Get Your Business Noticed?

Karen Griffin - Friday, October 11, 2013

So, how do you get your business noticed?  By not being a shrinking violet!  Subtle is great for some businesses, especially those large enough to have a powerful brand presence.  But most smaller businesses just want current and potential customers to remember them.  So get your name on everything!  Clothing, business cards - but especially your vehicle.

How To Update Your Vinyl Banner

Karen Griffin - Thursday, September 12, 2013

We are really committed to keeping unwanted banners out of landfill.  So even if you didn't buy your vinyl advertising banner from us originally, please consider purchasing vinyl lettering so that you can update and re-use it, rather than dispose of it.

Pictures speak so much louder than words, so this short video will show you how easy it is to update your banner . .

How To Update Your Vinyl Advertising Banner

The Real Cost of Free Artwork

Karen Griffin - Thursday, August 22, 2013

How did we end up being in the logo design business.  Well we didn't!  Not on purpose anyway.  It happens regularly, simply because many of our customers are new business start ups, and we love a new project!  First stop on starting their business, is to get their van or car sign written so that they can start to spread the word about their new business.  Now this is where we often slip up, because we offer a free artwork service for all our vehicle and banner designs.  Many customers already have logos to send us, or even professionally designed printed media, and all that is needed is our expertise in converting this information into large scale media design.  We like to think we are experts in this:

Steve Christopher Event

Banner Design for Steve ChristopherBut free artwork is not the same as a free logo design - for that we work with qualified graphic designers who can produce fantastic branding that works on large scale media (such as vehicles and banners) as well as looking good on printed media (business cards and leaflets) and websites.  But this service has a cost that many start ups simply don't see the need for.

So what usually happens for these new businesses is that we put together a great vehicle design, and install it.  The customer is (invariably) delighted and comes back a month or so later to tell us that they have received so many fantastic comments that they want to use the design on their business cards, website etc.  So when does free artwork, become free logo design?

In the customer's eyes, there is no cost attached to simply putting the design onto a disc or emailing it to a printer.  But it is never that simple.  As large scale media manufacturers, we design for our purpose - and this means that they are often not suitable for just printing without some re-scaling of the image.  We use CorelDraw, and that file extension cannot be read by those who do not subscribe to this design package.  A logo is a very valuable identity, especially when used across all marketing creating a recognisable identity and thus becomes a brand.  We would be selling ourselves short if we just gave this service away.

So after much soul searching, we hope we have come up with a good solution - for us, and for our customers.

Designing graphics for vehicles and banners is such a big part of what we do, that we still will be offering free artwork.  Without our particular skills, acquired with long experience, we risk making banners and vehicle graphics which are less effective than they could be with a specialised large scale media design.  But if that artwork involves creating an identity, then the invoice will list the cost of this artwork should the customer decide to buy it later.  The cost will not be imposed for the items we make from the artwork, but only if the customer wants to take ownership.  Cost will vary dependent on the design, but we will provide an email or CD of all file types so the design can be used on any popular software.

Does this sound fair?

Can Small Businesses Be Reliable?

Karen Griffin - Thursday, August 01, 2013

This very question was something we had to tackle ourselves recently.  Our newer cutting machine effectively 'died' after a power surge caused the motherboard to fry (and just 2 days out of warranty!).  Sounds technical, but an emergency courier dash up north to the experts in Staffordshire saw the machine repaired and back in service after only 5 days.

We have two cutting machines, and at this time of year, they both run all day.  In order to meet our deadlines, the older of the machines had to work nigh on 12 hours a day, so our customers were not inconvenienced at all.  Both machines are serviced annually, timed to coincide with a break for the whole company, so this breakdown was completely out of the blue.

Having two machines certainly mitigates the risk, but in reality, both of them are set to cut different types of vinyl, so we needed to be a bit more organised about the order the jobs were completed in, but overall we coped really well considering it was a situation we hadn't planned for.

van sign writing No small manufacturing company can have all the expensive machinery to meet the demands of every customer, which is why we work closely with a number of other businesses. This means we can offer our customers a full 'one stop' shop as full solution providers.  So, like this van, we can offer full colour, laminated logos which beautifully compliment the traditional sign writing.

We have also been known to loan staff if one local company is struggling with a big order while we were quieter, and vice versa - a boon during sickness and holiday time.  This collaboration means we have access to trade prices for vinyl printing - a service often needed by customers with full colour logos, amongst other services such as full graphic design, business card printing etc.

As well as making a small business more reliable, these collaborations do, I believe, make small business more competitive as instead of buying or leasing lots of different types

Big Enough To Cope, Small Enough To Care

of machinery, we can reduce our overheads by investing in one type of machine, that we get to understand well and use to its full potential.  Aggressively competitive companies in this sector seem not to be in business for long, whilst we are proud to have been trading since 2005.

So if you like the continuity and fast response offered by a small business, cast aside your concerns about reliability and instead ask them how they would cope in a crisis -you might be pleasantly surprised by the answer.

Our workshop and office is closed for the first weeks in August - and we look forward to returning, refreshed, on 19 August.

Whether The Weather

Karen Griffin - Monday, July 01, 2013

Being mobile sign writers, we do have to turn our hand to weather forecasting quite often.  Understandably, our clients want an idea of when their vehicle will be signed - and we need to know where they will be working on that day!  Many of our customers are local tradesmen, and they hop from job to job.  Some are at the same customer for a whole day, but many, like plumbers can visit up to four customers a day - with us in tow!

And of course we have to plan our work time. No point being in the workshop on a dry day, then having nothing to do when it is wet!

For long lasting results, it is best to sign write when the air and vehicle are dry.  Temperature of less than 5c make the vinyl brittle and prone to tearing, as well as causing the adhesive to become, well, less sticky.

Temperatures over 20c can cause the vinyl to stretch, but, like high winds, we can often work around this.

So tomorrow, we think it will be wet, so have a full day of banner making planned.  Lets hope it doesn't rain in SW19, so we can listen along to the tennis whilst we work!

I got the vinyls on time and they were great!
Thank you for your quick work, that was really appreciated!
